iPhone 6S No Backlight Repair

Posted on January 19, 2017February 26, 2018 By Mike 21 Comments on iPhone 6S No Backlight Repair

The third most common repair for us has been the iPhone 6S no backlight repair.  What usually happens is that the customer decides to replace their own screen, forgets or decides not to disconnect the battery, and then as soon as the lcd/digitizer connector shorts itself across the pins, they see a puff of smoke from the logic board.

The pins across the connector are shorted resulting in the puff of smoke

To confirm that the backlight is no longer working, disconnect the battery, reconnect it, then plug in a USB lightning cable.  Immediately shine a bright light on the center the screen and you should be able to see a faint apple logo.  That will confirm that there is a problem with the backlight system.

To confirm that there is a backlight problem, shine a flashlight to the middle of the screen and boot the phone up.  You should see a faint apple logo.

Why does the backlight blow so often? Well, the short story is that the screen is supplied a constant power even when it’s off because the touch IC chip is built directly onto the screen.  Watch the video for more details:

YouTube player

On the iPhone 6 and 6+ and prior series iphones, when the screen is off, there is no power going to the screen.  For the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, the power is constant, regardless of whether the screen is on or off.

To fix the problem, the backlight filter (FL4211) needs to be replaced.  This is the main power line that handles the 3.8V power to the screen.

You’ll need either a hot air rework station or some microtweezers.  I don’t think a regular soldering iron will be small enough to do the job.  Here’s a video of us repairing the burned out and broken filter:

If you can’t or don’t want to repair it, then let us do it for you!  Fill out the quote request form and we’ll get right back to you.  Usually backlight filter repairs are done within 24 hours after receiving the device.

I have an iPhone 6s with a backlight problem. The screen turns on with no light (I can barely see whats on the screen with bright light shined on it) but everything else still works on the phone. The touch screen works, apps work, it’s just the screen that’s really dim is what the problem is. Is this a filter that blew or is it the entire system?

99% of the time, it’s just the filter.

I just had a replacement screen put on my daughter’s iphone 6s. It worked fine for several hours. Having a low battery she placed it on the charger and left it for 30mins or so. When she came back, it was dark and we could barely see the Apple logo. When I took it back to the store I had it repaired at, they totally blew me off like she had to had dropped it again. Is it possible they actually did this by mistake and didn’t want to admit it? Or is it possible for it to go out for no reason?

It’s possible that it went out for no reason. Or it could possibly be the screen. Sometimes it’s even the charger that you use.

Hi there. Where can find this backlight filter FL4211? I tried find 240-ohm 350ma filter from iPhone 6 donor board but I didn’t find any. Is there some filter in previous iPhone e that can be used?

    Hi

I have a backlight issue after a screen replacement. Mine is slightly different though. If the battery runs out on the phone and I press the power button the screen lights up with the ‘connect charger’ symbol. If I plug it in the battery symbol shows up fine, the screen looks perfect. Once the phone turns itself on the screen goes black. If i hit the power button the screen will flicker on for half a second then go black again. This is the only time it will flicker on and to recreate the effect I have to wait till the battery is dead again.

This is still clearly a backlight issue but with different symptoms. What would be your suggestion?
I have ordered an FL4211 filter anyway and plan to replace it using my SMD rework station but do you think it could be another issue?

check diode mode for the top six pins starting from the left and the three backlight pins to find your fault.

Thank you very much. Hugely appreciate the tip. Just to confirm, you’re referring to the pins on J4200?

Why is it called “no backlight” ? i have same issue but flashlight on the back is working. Only no screen. I unplugged first battery cable, and then screen cables but when i try to reconnect, i felt burn smoke for a second. After that i have this issue. Itunes recognize and i have sounds from phone, but no screen. So this is “no backlight” issue and need to reopair mainboard? Screen replacement won’t work?

I damaged the antenna and charge quick connectors on the motherboard of my galaxy note 10+ cell phone, no one locally could repair it without sending it samsung for more... read more than the phone was worth so I sent it here for soldering work. The price was very reasonable and the phone works amazing and has now for months. I take it biking with me in my pocket and have put it through it's paces and it still works great. Quality work.
